It's not drought, it's looting

Now that the entire legal framework of Chile is being debated, I believe that the water code, which has been inherited by the disastrous Pinochet dictatorship, cannot be lacking in these debates. This law guarantees water, but unfortunately it guarantees water to entrepreneurs and individuals. It is a law that has allowed excessive looting of water, to the point that rivers have diminished so much that the areas where they used to pass have suffered the greatest consequences: droughts.

Individuals who have the right to use water is because they have bought it. The previous government proposed that these be temporarily with the possibility of expiring when not being used. However, Piñera proposed not to innovate, leaving the current situation without any alteration. What does this mean water rights? It means that if I make a well in my territory without owning the water, and my neighbor has certain rights purchased and I use “what belongs to him” even if I am in my territory, I could have legal problems with him.

In my opinion, there cannot be an owner who is able to buy the water. Water is everyone's right. A right that should have as priority had nature and human life. The system in which we live does not allow it, monocultures, mining companies, agribusinesses use this right for their own benefit and to be able to fill their pockets of money, while in some rural areas people receive drinking water twice a week.
Water should have property, but which belongs to the community. That the community is organized and manages to distribute the water in the best possible way.

  3. Your post reminded me of the song ''Latin America'' Because they can buy everything but the wind, sun, rain, heat, clouds and our joys and colors

  4. This is so serious, especially with global warming, and the Central Zone of Chile will have (is having) water scarcity. Access to water is a basic right.
